A small intimate restaurant that recreates exotic India, both with food and décor. Everything is authentic - they import their spices directly from India as well as their chefs.
All dishes are individually prepared in the style of the Mughals who ruled India for generations. They follow the ancient Hindu tradition of "stricly vegetarian", which excludes eggs but des include dairy items. Despite this, most dishes on the menu can be prepared without using any animal products.

This is my favorite vegetarian shop. I've been enjoying their tasty yet affordable meals & snacks for more than 10 years. I love it's homely feel and a friendly service with a smile. I take all my friends both from oversees and local to Little Gujarat. Crime free food at it's best!

I definitely recommend this place. The food is yummy and they've got a great choice of vegan dishes. Also, a lot of the vegetarian dishes can be 'veganized' quite easily as long as you ask for no cream.
Masala Dosa
Masala Dosa is the only local Indian restaurant that specialises in southern Indian cookery. Less fiery than the cuisine most South Africans associate with Indian food, here the emphasis is on exotic, yet healthy and tasty.
The brainchild of restaurateur, Amit Raz, Masala Dosa combines simplicity with an artistic eye for funky Bollywood decor and is unlike any other eatery in the city.
All ingredients are specially selected for their quality and freshness and integral to the restaurant's culture is the promotion of organic products, recycling and biodegradable packaging. Overall, a wholesome eatery at very reasonable prices.

Thought the portions were small and the food not at all spicy.
I loved the masala iced tea though.
Namaskar Restaurant
Namaskar Restaurant has one of the largest varieties of vegetarian meals in South Africa. It is a upmarket venue catering for government departments, embassy’s, businesses, as well as the general public, with private dining facilities for up to 200 people. They are fully licensed and have a red wine cellar with 100 different wines to choose from. Other than the vegetarian dishes, their meals are also halaal.
There are full buffet facilities and they can cater for large functions: weddings, engagements, birthdays and corporate functions. They strive to be the best at all times.

Shayona

The Mayfair restaurant also has a shop where you can stock up on rice, beans, spices, etc.
They do use ghee and paneer in some of their dishes, but if you speak to the staff, they will indicate which dishes are dairy free.

I would not reccomend that this be listed on Vegan SA directory. The staff do not understand what it means by no dairy, and they make your chappathi on a pan that may have just made ghee chapathi. I wonder how this got accepted to be listed? I mean have the staff been trained and informed? In Spiceburg restuarant they told me clearly that they have separate pots and pans for cooking vegan food, this is why I rather go there and eat than at Shayona. Do you know how tough it is?
I have experienced this in India even, several mistakes they just don't know what it is not to use dairy products, and Shayona is run by people of Indian origin. No offence, I am also of Indian origin but I find these Hindu/religious vegetarians lack the concept of veganism. I even had one waiter tell me that a little bit of dairy if good for me when they gave me dairy after I gave clear instructions not too!
Spiceburg Restaurant
Spiceburg Restaurant is the only restaurant which specialises in south & north Indian cuisine as most other restaurants simply prepare northern Indian. There is a huge difference between south & north Indian cuisine.
On your arrival, please request the Vegan Menu. There are around 30 vegan dishes available, from soups, starters, salads, bread & rice, main dishes and desserts too.

This place is nice and friendly and all vegan foods are cooked in separate pots and pans for vegan dishes. A must try is the Tanduri roti which is clay stove heated rotis. Aadila, you are not aware what a chapathi is a completely different item to a roti. It is a South Indian dish, while roti is North Indian dish. Gobi Manchurian, masala dosa, dhall was superb! I took my family there and we enjoyed. We spent R260 for a family of 4 people, and guess what we were stuffed there was enough to take home! Yes, they still need a vegan dessert, actually I shall speak to the owner, there are a number of wonderful South Indian vegan dishes. My mom makes them for us. I would certainly recomend this place.
I ate at Spiceburg last night and had a wholly wonderful experience. I am vegan and my partner vegetarian, and we shared a set of vegan dishes, none of which was less than decent. The service was prompt, friendly and helpful. The manager gave his recommendations which we swiftly agreed to and ordered.
We enjoyed 2 homemade ginger beers, which were refreshing and tangy. Our starter (a secret recommendation from the manager on a "you don't like it, you don't pay for it" agreement) was Pepper Gobi, a tasty peppery cauliflower dish. I wish I could remember the names of our mains, but they included a giant, light, crispy pancake filled with potato curry; poppadums with spicy apricot sambal; a coconut vegetable curry; and a chappati. Only the chappati was slightly disappointing, whilst the rest was unbelievably good.
We were a little bit sad to discover there was no vegan dessert, but this is to be expected. One could enjoy a chocolate soy milk drink (as advertised by the manager) if one had enough room left for it... I was enthralled to be catered for at all.
The meal (no alcohol) was around R110 a head, pricy for a student like me, but reasonable for professionals. I would thoroughly recommend Spiceburg. Our experience was fantastic.
Had dinner here last night. While there is a fair number of vegan options on the menu, I was not very impressed with the food. The wine list is limited but passable. For starters we shared the crispy brinjal chips. The spicy masala coating was yummy but the brinjal was not crunchy and a bit watery in places. The portion was quite small for R40. I had the aloo palak (potato spinach curry) with rice and a chapati for mains. It was quite tasteless. While the romali roti is indicated as vegan on the menu, I was given a brown flour dry chapati instead. Very disappointing. My boyfriend is an omni and had the chicken vindaloo. He ordered the hot and it came tasting less than mild. It was not lacking in taste though so he was satisfied. Also no vegan desserts on the menu. :( Will not be going back to Spiceburg.
