Cheezly
If you love cheese but can't or won't eat dairy, Cheezly is for you. A really tasty alternative to cheese, Cheezly is totally free from animal ingredients. So it's perfect for vegetarians and vegans, as well as people who are lactose or casein intolerant. Available in a wide range of cheese flavours - Cheddar Slices, Mature Cheddar, Edam, Gouda, Mozzarella and Nacho. Major stockists include Shoprite Checkers and Pick n Pay stores nationwide.

As far as I know, Checkers no longer stocks Cheezly - they do stock another brand of vegan cheese which I think tastes awful - more yeast than cheese. But maybe someone might like the taste. I guess after Cheezly I got spoiled! You can get Cheezly at the Douglasdale Pick n Pay but I have not seen it in other stores. I also contacted the distributors and bought some directly from them. http://www.distributors.co.za/ - if you phone them they are very helpful.
Does anyone know if these or other vegan cheese can be found in East London? I have not found any cheese yet.
Life Vegan Cheese
Parmazano is the non-dairy, grated alternative to the famous Italian cheese. Used widely by vegans, vegetarians and families with a member who is allergic to dairy products or lactose, it is used in many ways, for example sprinkled on pasta dishes, making white sauces, quiches, savoury tart bases and cheesy biscuits.
Cheddareese is also available alongside Parmazano, non-dairy, grated hard cheese replacer with the traditional creamy taste of Cheddar.
The Life Free From range is listed in all major Pick 'n Pay, Checkers and Spar stores countrywide.

If you are used to animal based Parmesan then this is not going to be what you are looking for. It is very tasty but it does not taste like Parmesan cheese. So if you have been vegan for ages and have not had any imported/American vegan Parmesan (made by Galaxy Foods in the US) then you might like this but otherwise, enjoy it for what it is, a yummy savoury sprinkle.
No-D-Cheese
No-D-cheese is a delicious non-dairy cheese substitute. It grates, cubes, melts and freezes well too. No-D is available in 2 options for now: Basil & Almond, and Rocket & Cashew. It is nut based with agar (a natural coagulate known to aid digestion). No-D-Cheese is dairy-free, soya, sugar, wheat and gluten-free. Made with olive oil, and no vegetable oil or spirit vinegars used. Available from good stores all around Johannesburg such as Bryanston, Sandton and Lenasia.

Vegusto No-Muh-Chäs
Have you been looking for a vegan cheese that really tastes like cheese? Then here is the chance to taste the purely plant based No-Muh specialties from Switzerland, the land of cheese. These specialties, handmade from a vegan production line, are now also available in South Africa.
5 varieties are available - Classic (mild, slightly sour), Herb (mild herb bouquet), Walnuts (mild-aromatic), Piquant (strongly aromatic) and Mild-Aromatic (mild aromatic). As far as we know, No-Muh Piquant is the only vegan cheese alternative with an edible rind.
No-Muh cheeses are available at Checkers nationwide.

I have tried all varieties of this cheese and personally I can't stand it. Not to say that someone else might like it - vegan cheese is definitely a personal taste choice! I found it more like yeast flavoured and when I made toasted cheese sandwiches with it the whole house smelled yeasty - and not in a good way for me. But do try it yourself :).
