Background on European Food
Europe has had a huge influence on the cuisine of many people around the world, as well as being a favourite of Europeans themselves. European settlers took their favourite dishes to many corners of the world, including all of the Americas, Africa, Australasia and the Pacific Islands. It is often referred to as Continental cuisine.
There are many famous cuisines in Europe, including French, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, Meditteranean and British, some of which are so popular that they deserve there own sections. Other distinctive cuisine regions include Western Europe where cheeses, breads, sausages, fries, chocolates and desserts are widely consumed; Northern Europe where ground meat, bacon, fish, cheese, potatoes, pickles and rye bread are popular; and Eastern Europe which is famed for stews and soups such as goulash and stroganoff.
The variety of dishes across Europe is astounding but perhaps the most commonly used ingredients are wheat bread, milk, cream and cheese (substitutes can be used to recreate these as vegan recipes), meat (often steak, sausage or gound beef), fish and seafood (again, substitutes can be used), as well as dumplings, pies and pastries. The "meat and 2 veg" stereotype meal is popular in many parts of Europe.
These days it's possible to find food from all corners of the world in most European towns and cities, as well as restaurants offering favourite dishes from other parts of Europe. We hope to bring you more vegan European recipes soon.
