Background on Desserts
A dessert is a dish that concludes a meal. It is thought that the word originates from the French word 'desservir' which means to "to clean the table". They are commonly known as 'sweets' since they are typcially sweet in taste.
Most desserts are vegetarian in their original recipe form (though watch out for gelatine) and can be made suitable for vegans with a little forethought and sometimes with the use of alternative ingredients, particularly for dairy products, eggs, bovine gelatine and honey.
Some of the most popular dessert types include puddings, pies, tarts, flans, cakes, biscuits, cookies, doughnuts, muffins, pastries, ice creams, sorbets, chocolates, mousses, custards, jellies, fruits, sweet rice dishes and sweet soups. Recipes for sweet tooths have been around a very long time. Ice cream was invented in China over 5,000 years ago, and apple pie can be traced back as far as the 14th century.
Iconic sweet dishes include our own malva pudding and koeksisters, bannofee pie and fruit crumble (UK), baklava (Turkey), tiramisu and gelato (Italy), pastel de Nata (Portugal), churros (Spain), cheesecake (Greece), waffles (Belgium), chocolate eclair and tarte tatin (France), Black Forest gateau (Germany), apple strudel (Austria), Pavlova (New Zealand), rice pudding (South America), banana flambe (Madagascar), mango with sticky rice (Thailand) and deep fried Mars bars (Scotland).
