Background on Ingredients
All recipes require food ingredients. Some are the core elements of dish, while others provide flavour, colour, substance or have some other purpose. Simple meals or snacks can be made from only a small handful of different ingredients, whereas more complex dishes might require a whole shopping list for preparation! In the case of vegan food, these ingredients must be plant-based, or not derived from animals.
Furthermore many dishes may require an ingredient to be prepared in advance since it is not possible (or not preferable) to buy it off-the-shelf. This is especially true of vegan meals, where ingredients might need to be created to substitute for animal-based products that are normally used. Examples include egg replacers (used for baking and binding), vegan butter, cashew nut cream (used in desserts), vegan fish or oyster sauces (used extensively in Asian cuisine).
One advantage of making your own meals is that you can purchase the ingredients yourself. In this way you can buy nutrient-rich fresh food and avoid the artificial preservatives, colourants, flavour enhancers and added sugar of ready-made meals and processed food.
