Background on Sandwiches
A sandwich is made from placing one or more foods on or wrapped in bread, or placed (sandwiched) between 2 slices of bread. It is thought that the word used to describe this type of food came into use in Britain in the 18th century, but food has been eaten with bread since ages past. The same word is also used in French, German and Spanish, but in Italian they are known as panini.
The humble sandwich has gained incredible popularity as a snack or finger food, but mainly as a portable lunch item for schools, work and picnics, where it is a main component of a 'packed lunch'. 'Gourmet sandwiches' are quite a modern invention that use a seemingly unlimited range of fillings and flavours. These creative foods are sometimes served as a main course.
In some parts of the world sandwiches are referred to as 'rolls' or 'butties'. The use of hot food fillings usually results in the food being called a 'burger', but the boundaries are quite blurred here.
Most western breads are vegan (but please do check the particular bread you intend to buy), so vegan sandwiches are super-easy to make and, with the enormous variety of vegetables, leafy greens, dressings and sauces available, your options are only limited by your own imagination.
Some of the most well known vegetarian sandwiches are chickpea or avocado salad sandwich, (vegan) egg & cress, cucumber, health wraps, veggie burger, veggie dog, falafel & hummus, TLT (tempeh, lettuce, and tomato), olive tramezzino, vada pav, chip butty, marmite, peanut butter, and jam/marmalade.
