Background on Side Dishes
Also known as 'side orders' or simply 'sides', these are foods that accompany the main course of a meal. They may be served on a separate dish or on the same plate as, but at the side of, the main course.
In Western culture, side dishes are usually fairly simple recipes that complement the main course. Commonly they might be a salad, breads (both covered in other sections of this website), a baked potato, rice, potato chips/fries etc. Other cuisines, such as Japanese and Korean, also make use of such dishes. They are usually made from vegetable products and therefore most will be suitable for vegetarians, if not vegans too.
Many restaurants will include side dishes in menu meal options, however some places require them to be ordered separately from an a la carte menu (especially places like steak houses).
Some meals make use of specific side dishes as part of an ingrained culinary tradition; examples include carrots, roast potatoes and Brussel sprouts with Christams Dinner, guacamole and refried beans with Mexican meals, and rices and breads with curries.
